What happens when someone is reported lost in the woods?

Find out on May 14 at Ramapo Valley County Reservation in Mahwah when New Jersey Search and Rescue volunteers demonstrate the techniques and equipment used to find and rescue unfortunate victims and offer guidance on how to avoid getting lost.  The unit will conduct the open house between the hours of 9 am and 3 pm .

There will be displays and demonstrations for all ages to observe or participate in. This will include preventive search and rescue classes to teach children and parents how to avoid getting lost and how to be prepared to deal with such a situation if it should occur. The team’s Mountain Rescue Unit will be demonstrating a real rope rescue scenario, and its K-9 unit will a search and location demonstration. In addition, on display will be the team’s cutting edge Mobile Operations Center. There will be instructions in direction finding, map reading, wilderness first aid and proper gear. Members will be present in full field gear prepared to answer questions.
