Body

The Trail Conference Conservation Corps has closed out our 2016 trail building season, but the Palisades Trail Crew works on so keep an eye out for worktrips posted during this winter season.  The Palisades

Trail Crew completed a tremendous amount of work on a new multi-use trail in Sterling Forest State Park. This trail is meant to accommodate and provide experiences for hiking, mountain biking, and equestrian user groups.

The crew served 2,731 member hours and engaged 171 volunteers who dedicated 1,200 volunteer hours to this project.  Using only hand tools and their own strength the crew and volunteers:

  • Improved 14,329 linear feet of trail
  • Constructed 2,257 linear feet of sidehill
  • Built 202.5 square feet of stone paving

The high productivity of the 2016 season would not have been possible without the help of some amazing volunteer groups:

  • Dirty Thursdays
  • Goldman Sachs
  • Mahwah Environmental Volunteers Organization
  • Nature Place Day Camp
  • North Face
  • Palisades MTB
  • Ramapo College
  • Rockland Conservation and Service Corps
  • UGG Boots

In addition to working with the above groups, we were graced by the commitment and integrity of many individual volunteers.  These unsung heroes took it upon themselves, during their free time, to join the crew in its efforts despite adverse climate conditions, rough terrain, and construction challenges.  We’d like to give a shout out to:

  • Alyson Oostdyk
  • Brian Lanius
  • Joshua Tipa
  • Michael Muchoe

We’d like to thank our partners: The Corps Network’s AmeriCorps EAP Program, Corporation for National and Community Service, New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation, Palisades MTB, Recreational Equipment Inc., Rockland Conservation and Service Corps, Harriman State Park Group Camps, Sterling Forest State Park Staff, and Trail Conference Volunteer Leadership for contributing to our success this season and enabling us to provide opportunities for stewardship to our communities.
