Park Description:

This forested wilderness connects watershed lands and is crossed by an old logging road. Streams, mixed oak-hardwood forest and swamps comprise the park. Trail entry is through the Farny Natural Area. Split Rock Reservoir is adjacent to the park.

Trails Overview:
  • "Four Birds Trail" [white; 19.4 mi] takes hikers from Hibernia through Wildcat Ridge Wildlife Management Area, Farny State Park, and Newark watershed lands to Route 23.   Click for topographical trail maps [also showing parking areas, and other linking trails].
    • Advisory: hiking in the Newark watershed at the northern end of this trail [Riley's Rise to NJ 23] is by permit only from the Newark Watershed Conservation and Development Corporation.  See Pequannock Watershed for permit details and fee schedule.
  • "Split Rock Loop Trail"  [blue; 7.8 miles] passes through the high country to the south and east of Splitrock Reservoir and completes a loop with the Four Birds Trail.  Terrain is rockier and more abrupt compared to the western side of the reservoir, and trails steeper.

Comments

Don't park along Split Rock Road

Parking is allowed only at the designated parking area at the south end of the reservoir just east of the dam. Illegally parked cars may be ticketed.

Observe PRIVATE PROPERTY

Hikers are cautioned to not leave the trail or 'Bushwack' from the trail as it travels the West Shore of Split Rock Reservoir, particularly thru the property owned by Camp Marcella & Camp Winnebago, or any attempts to reach the Durham Road Extension. This is a long stretch of trail and you should plan accordingly, and any attempt to get off and road walk will only prolong your hike. If you become fatigued or benighted, back track and return to your starting point. "KEEP OUT " means YOU ! As always the NY-NJ Trail Conference is attempting to find routes for 'Loop' hikes, but untill we do, please stay on the trail. Thanks
