| Park Description: | This picturesque and historic reservation, which runs through the heart of southern Westchester County, features ponds, wooden footbridges and hundreds of varieties of native trees and shrubs. It is a favorite place for bicycling, walking, running and nature study. When completed in 1925, the Bronx River Parkway was part of a wooded reservation, with a pathway running along the parkway for its entire length. In 1967, a two-mile section from Hartsdale to Scarsdale was eliminated as part of a project to improve the vehicular parkway, but the remainder of the 12-mile reservation stretching from Valhalla to Bronxville is still intact. Except for a 1.1-mile section north of Hartsdale, the pathway is paved for its entire length. Although it parallels the parkway, it is often located some distance from the roadway, and it closely tracks the river for much of the way. |
| Trails Overview: | Click on the Web Map "Bronx River Parkway" link near the top of this page to examine the reservation's three paved sections which include: the Oak Street Loop (1 mile) separating Yonkers and Mount Vernon; the Bronxville to Scarsdale section (4.6 miles); and the Hartsdale to Kensico Dam Plaza section (5 miles) in Valhalla. The Friends of Westchester County Parks has created a very unique Bronx River audio walking tour which provides information on history, flora and fauna. Narrated by Dan Rather, the tour stars at Kensico Dam Plaza with stop #1 then moves south to stop #26 at Bronxville. While hiking along the pathway, hikers can call (914) 517-5575 and follow the prompts at each identified stop. By linking to the site beforehand you can download files to an MP3 or MP4 player and/or print a brochure that includes thumbnail photos of each stop with a brief description and two maps displaying numbered tour stops throughout the reservation. A similar map of the audio tour is available at a Cycling Central, Lower Hudson Valley blog. For a detailed description of a hike click on “Find a Hike” and scroll down to the name of this reservation. |
